Overview

Designs, tests and implements packaging designs that are an integral part of the organization’s Product Development as well as existing packaging improvements already in production to minimize or eliminate customer or shipping quality issues.

This individual develops, designs and tests standards and guidelines for developing packaging solutions for the organization as well as review and improve existing packaging designs.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and manage complete packaging development process, including the creation of packaging designs, prototype development and performance testing.
  • Troubleshoot new and existing packaging problems involving designs, materials and processes and provide creative, timely and cost-effective solutions.
  • Analyze engineering drawings and specifications of products to determine physical characteristics, special handling, environment and safety requirements and types of materials required for packaging.
  • Establish standards and guidelines for supplier evaluation. Evaluate and select packaging suppliers/vendors; periodically conduct vendor reviews and audits.
  • Must be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Work closely with global suppliers, engineering, product management, operations, quality and sourcing.
  • Participate in all new product introduction activities related to packaging.
  • Identify and implement cost saving initiatives related to packaging material, labor, efficiency, transportation and storage.
  • Work closely with engineering to optimize packaging supply base, lead time, quality, regionalization, standardization, supply assurance and compliance with customer, regulatory and internal requirements.
  • Specify and recommend efficiency tools and test methods to develop and validate packaging designs.
  • Work closely with manufacturing to insure that the packaging designs are optimized for manufacturability.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive test plans to ensure that packaging exceeds customer specifications.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical or Packaging Engineering preferred).
  • Must have 3-5 years of experience in industrial or consumer packaging.
  • Knowledge and understanding of packaging design validation standards (ISO, ASTM, etc.), drafting and specification standards are essential.
  • Knowledge of engineering principles, practices and techniques commonly employed in the design and production of company products.
  • Excellent verbal, written and communication skills with the ability to communicate engineering concepts to non-engineers.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrates attention to detail and thrives in a team environment
  • Exercise initiative, achievement, and independent judgment
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus.

COMPUTER SKILLS:

  • Proficient using 3D CAD modeling software (ie. Solidworks).
  • Strong computer skills
